Preview: NRL release ‘Unreal’ ad campaign for 2022 season

Unlike its previous big-budget campaigns, the NRL has released its 2022 promo, featuring a host of familiar faces. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

The NRL has gone back to basics with its new advertising campaign for the 2022 season.

It’s a radical departure from previous big-budget campaigns and features Nathan and Ivan Cleary, James Tedesco, Daly Cherry Evans, Josh Addo Carr, Jess Sergis and Tazmin Gray.

The 60-second ad includes a tribute to recently retired star Benji Marshall and a guest appearance from Avalon Bulldogs 10-year-old Axel Wolthers.

“The theme of our marketing for the 2022 season is to celebrate all the authentic and real moments that exist in rugby league. From junior participation to great final glory,” said NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo.

A 30-second version featuring all 16 clubs will be released next week.

“Our players, the communities they represent, the adversity our clubs and athletes face and, above all, the authenticity of our fans. Our game is truly real and that’s what makes rugby league unreal,” Abdo said.

“The unreal brand across the Telstra Premiership, Club Rugby League, NRLW and State of Origin is something we will look to maintain for several seasons.

“2020 was the year the game led the pandemic comeback, 2021 was the year we moved for the first time in our history and 2022 will be our biggest yet with an NRL Telstra Premiership, two Telstra NRLW Premierships, Ampol State of Origin and World Cups at the end of the year.

“This campaign combines youth participation with elite play and we will continue to integrate grassroots rugby league into all of our major events throughout the season.”
